Ontario Residents Use iFactor Mobile App During July’s Thunderstorms
The Weather Network
This July, severe thunderstorms caused rolling blackouts across southern Ontario, Canada, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity. During these storms, Ontario residents used their local utility’s iFactor Mobile™ application with the iFactor Storm Center™ map to report outages and check estimated power restoration times for their home or business. The number of mobile application sessions, new users, and unique outage map visits during the storm increased dramatically:
Total mobile app sessions increased from a daily average of around 5,000 to nearly 60,000 (a session is any time a user runs the mobile application).
The amount of new mobile app downloads increased from about 300 per day to 5,300.
Unique outage map visits using the mobile app increased from about 1,500 to 16,000 visits per day.
The local utility supplies power to more than 1.3 million end user customers and smaller municipal utilities in the province. In addition to information about the outage map and mobile app on their website, the utility highlighted the mobile app as a free resource for access to restoration times in their media releases following the storm.
